El Libro Español –
A Spanish Celebration
Directed by Jane McCulloch
With its beauty, drama and, above all, its passion there is little wonder that the music of Spain and other Spanish speaking countries has a powerful influence on music world-wide. We have devised this Hispanic Extravaganza as a celebration of and homage to that influence.
With a talented cast, including dancers, guitar, piano and percussion, headed by sultry Puerto Rican soprano, Scheherazade Pesante, this is a lively, informative and very entertaining production.
The programme contains not only internationally known and loved classics but also rarely heard beautiful pieces from the zarzuela, theatre music, flamenco, ancient Spanish canciones and other genres
Zarzuela is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and sung scenes, incorporating operatic and popular song, as well as dance. The name derives from a Royal hunting lodge, the Palacio de la Zarzula near Madrid, where this type of entertainment was first presented to the court of Spain. Zarzula spread to the Spanish colonies, and many Hispanic countries – notably Cuba.
